what would be the lowest caliber that you would safely carry in the woods for a bear just for self defense. My mom wants to get a hand gun for when she is out picking blueberrys for just in case. But i don't think she would be able to shoot anything that wouldn't just piss the bear off. MMMMM delicous human in blueberrys sounds like bear desert to me.

Around here to just help scare off a black bear a .22 should be just fine. It will make enough noise and flash to scare off a bear. But don't shoot the bear with it! If we were talking Grizzly I have a friend in Wyoming that has hot .45 Long Colt loads in a Ruger RedHawk that he hopes he never has to use. |

she shot my 357 the other day with 38 special rounds i thing that a 22 would almost be better because of penetration if she did have to shoot it but yes i agree it is mainly for scaring our black bears off but if they have cubs that is a different story. |

Yeah that is a good one i didn't even think of was the 10mm those things are easy to shoot. She shot one round of my 357mag but i don't think she liked it or could be of any use shooting it at any thing haha thanks i will have to let her know about the 10mm |

On a bear hide? Shit no. 40gr vs 158gr, believe me, the .38/357 will definetly out penetrate the .22 A .357mag can be loaded to levels that will generate 800ft. lbs of enegery, the .22 at best out of a handgun might be pushing 75-80ft lbs at best. On bears and dangerous game you want a heavy non-hp bullet that will penetrate deep and crush bones. |

Actually in the hands of a non experienced shot, Alaska's F&W claim it is far superior against all but the surliest of big bears. Pennsylvania also claims that it has been used to very good effect by its own officers in the field. Remember Minnesota bears are not 1000 pound monsters, but usually 200 or so pound averages, using spray is not tantamount to preseasoning yourself. IF you are going to give your mom a gun, a light 44 mag carbine trapper model or even a 357 trapper with hard casts driven to the max, is a far better and with a nice sling, far easier to carry choice. |

12 gauge shotgun, 3.5" magnum copper-plated 00 buckshot. For backup, either a Glock 20 or a .44 Mag revolver, I can't decide. I lean towards the Glock simply because I can actually plan on hitting something a few times in a panic with the 10mm Glock, and I like the idea of 15+1 rounds of 10mm. The .44 Mag is about the most I can shoot in a panic and actually hit something, and the revolver has the potential to be more reliable. The really big calibers (.454, .480, .500, etc) of course have healthier terminal ballistics but they also have harsh muzzle blast and recoil that the idea of yanking the trigger repeatedly under stress and getting something done is kind of iffy. Probably great for planned shots or really experienced guys, but probably a bit much for the rest of us. |
