He's talking about something for his mom, Not too many women are going to be comfy carting around 3 inch slugs or a x frame S&W. http://www.counterassault.com/Bear_Dete ... rrent.html The bear spray people again they are using big bears as the model, on smaller blacks, this stuff works very well. |

The Ruger Alaskan would be a good choice and a gun I would like to have one day. Can be had in .45 long colt, .44 mag, or .454 Casull. The problem would be if Mom could handle one of those loads. The noise alone would probably send a MN. blackbear running for the hills. Unless it was a female with cubs. I've taken black bear with a 10mm 180gr JHP Sierra. The 44mag 240gr JHP just sped two others up and of course my 308 rifle turns them off like a switch. They can jump a lot higher, a lot faster and a lot farther than you think. All in the blink of an eye. The 44mag hollow points were a bad choice, but the 10mm made it look easy. 10mm's are magical. Penetration is the secret. Course these are only black bears. |

No comfy should mean something that she can reliably shoot accurately as well as haul around. Bear spray is what I have used in the BWCA and while I have had a back up, it worked, My mother used it as well when she was near 75 Years old and she could never hit anything with any handgun, but she was a tack driver with a .22. Why try to make testing a mom's "manhood" part of the equation, lets find something that works, fits her needs, and is something she can manage. I am probably one of the least recoil sensitive people on Earth, yet I prefer carting something like a 4 inch .45 Colt mountain gun with 300 grain hard casts over something like a 454 casull. Why? Because in all my years of camping, hunting, fishing, canoeing, I have only found one Bear who was immune to all the usual precautions. We just chose to move camp that night rather than deal with the issues of shooting a nuisance bear. so that means instead of hauling 54 ounces or or so of stainless, I am carrying 31 or so of a mountain gun, and it will do the job just fine. The only person I personally know who has shot a charging brown bear did just fine with a 357 mag shooting 180 Grain hard casts. WHy? because that is the gun she had with her when it happened, and it was a gun she was comfy shooting. |

Someone told me once that if you are going to be in bear country, just make sure that there is someone else in your group that you can outrun. If it turns out that you are the fat guy, then just carry a .25 or .32 and practice enough that you can hit someone in the knee if a bear presents himself. 
Seriously, I have heard very good things about pepper spray on bears. I understand that it's also effective as shark repellent. |

If tou mom is a newbie to shooting or to magnum caliber handguns, then pepper spray is what she should get. It's a lot of work and money to get to being able to shoot a gun that will kill a bear reliably, and while a black bear is not as dangerous as a grizzly, it can still F*** you up pretty good, particularly if it's wounded. 10mm Ammo is quite pricey unless you handload, so you can forget that. 38 Spl in a .357 is too weak, and .357 is minimum ante at best, and that's if you're a good shot. Bottom line, 44 mag is a safe bet, but it's a lot of work to be able get proficient with it. |
