This reminds me of the attack on Fluffy, in her bookstore, some years ago. The thugs there didn't get nearly what they deserved, either.

Didn't this actually happen in December, and is news now because of the court case? Or am I confusing it with another crime?

The incident in September is different than this incident. In November:

Quote:
Michael Deangelo Sanders, 19, and his brother Michael Julius Farley, 21, are accused of robbing a man of his cash on Sept. 20 in the 4200 block of Lake Breeze Avenue N. in Brooklyn Center. Farley allegedly hit the victim repeatedly on the head with a handgun, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. The victim is still recovering from the serious head injury.

Sanders is described as 5 feet 11 and 230 pounds. He goes by the street name Lo. Farley, who goes by the name Julius, is 6 feet 2 and 160 pounds. He has a tattoo on his neck that reads "Low-N."

Of course in June another person, this time a woman, was beaten to death.

In this case Christopher Lamor Johnson, 16, has been charged with first-degree assault and burglary. There was another person apprehended but his name and age have not been given. Nevertheless, I am sure that his name is a melange of proper nouns that reference appliances, snack foods, hair treatments, television personalities, and Presidents.

You mean Bernie Goetz.

It'd be nice.

No. Bernie Goetz' targets survived, although one had to stick to robbinng places with wheelchair ramps, IIRC...

The character in "Deathwish" had a little bit better sucess rate in preventing recidivism. In fact, his was the most effective crime control there can be.

Meanwhile, a benefit fund has been set up. If you would like to help, you can send a donation to Wells Fargo Bank; address it to the Norman Arneson Benefit Fund.

I like the sticker he has on his door...."Freedom isn't Free".

An earlier burglary to the same guy. The second paragraph of the quoted story reads:

Quote:
The 81-year-old installed motion detector lights and boarded up the opening in the garage where the thieves had gotten in. But none of the simple precautions could have helped him Sunday, when two teenage boys knocked on his door, pushed him down and beat him while they looked for items to steal, his family said.

I suggest a more organized approach.

Sigh.

Look. I do understand frustration. Pretty easy, as I share it. And I do understand the use of, well, verbal excesses.

But . . . death squads and lesser forms of vigilantism have a real, real bad history, and suggestions that they are solutions -- even when it's just blowing steam, as I'm sure it is here -- aren't a good idea. Please don't do it again.

Yes sir. My apologies.

I was blowing off steam and to suggest such action was in bad form.

Teen Charged With Beating Elderly Man For Money
BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (WCCO) ―

A Brooklyn Park teenager has been charged for allegedly beating and robbing an elderly man.

Christopher Lamor Johnson, 16, has been charged with first-degree assault and burglary for allegedly beating an 81-year-old man in his Brooklyn Center home and attempting to steal money from him.

Court documents said a neighbor of the elderly man called 911 when she saw two young men push the elderly man inside his home after he answered the door.

When police arrived they found the victim kneeling on the floor with his head covered in blood. According to police, they found the house in disarray with blood splatter on the floor and walls.

Police arrested one of the young men when he tried to run out of the house. With the help of a K9 unit, police were able to locate Johnson, who was hiding underneath a car inside the victim's garage.

The elderly victim was transported the North Memorial Medical Center where doctors had to perform emergency brain surgery to stop bleeding in his brain.

According to court documents, when police interviewed Johnson, he told police that he and the other young man were broke and needed money. The young man said he knew an "old dude" who probably had some money.

Johnson told police they came up with a plan to rob the elderly man. Court documents said when they got to the house the two knocked on the door and first asked about doing yard work before pushing the elderly man into the house, beating and robbing him.

Johnson is charged with one count of first-degree assault and two counts of first-degree burglary, both of which are felonies

Starts out by somebody ringing your doorbell and then asking you a stupid question. "Can we do yard work?" or "Can we use your phone?" or "Got a match?" are common precursors to getting attacked.

I don't think you'll find one person here that would disagree with you. Our prayers go out to Norm and his family.

Its hard to believe that a 16 year old would be so desensitized to violence that he would consider almost killing an old man just because he was short of money.
I look back to when I was 16 and I don't think I would have been capable of that. First of all, the thought would never have even crossed my mind.

The following is taken from a 5 year study conducted by the FBI on Cop attackers:
"have no hesitation whatsoever about pulling the trigger. "If you hesitate," one told the study’s researchers, "you’re dead. You have the instinct or you don’t. If you don’t, you’re in trouble on the street..."

"the study team "did not realize how cold blooded the younger generation of offender is. They have been exposed to killing after killing, they fully expect to get killed and they don't hesitate to shoot anybody, including a police officer. They can go from riding down the street saying what a beautiful day it is to killing in the next instant."

These thugs just don't care anymore.

While this wasn’t a shooting the thug’s actions still apply. They have no remorse or compassion. They will beat you to death without hesitation. This man could not have been a threat to them or hindered them in any way. He could be a witness and give a description however. Reason enough to kill him in their minds.

This whole thing is so scary to me. My father-in-law lives in BC, built his home there from the basement up in the '50's, raised 4 children there. He is a couple of years older that Mr. Arneson, likely they know each other. There are many of these long time residents in BC, sadly these elderly pillars of the community are now becoming easy victims of the sub-human types.

Brooklyn Center teen to stand trial as adult for March assault, burglary

# BY WENDY ERLIEN SUN NEWSPAPERS

(Created: Tuesday, June 23, 2009 12:00 PM CDT)

A 16-year-old Brooklyn Center male has been charged as an adult in a March 22 burglary and assault in Brooklyn Center.

Orlando Sharbarus Fitzgerald was ordered to stand trial as an adult on Thursday, June 18 after proceedings in front of Judge David Duffy, according to the criminal complaint. Fitzgerald was charged with first degree assault and two counts of aiding and abetting first degree burglary on Friday, June 19 - all felonies. Fitzgerald was 15 years old when the alleged incident occurred.

The teen faces the charges for allegedly forcing his way into the home of an 82-year old Brooklyn Center man, beating him and trying to make off with valuables.

The criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court provides the following account and allegations:

At 10:14 a.m. March, police were called to a home in the 5700 block of Northport Drive in Brooklyn Center on a neighbor's report of a home invasion.

The front door was open when the officers arrived and police said they found the elderly man inside kneeling on the floor and covered in blood.

Police said they located Fitzgerald running out of the house and he was taken into custody and the wallet of the homeowner was recovered from one of his pockets.

Christopher Lamor Johnson, 16, of Brooklyn Park was also charged in the case on Tuesday, March 24 with aiding and abetting first degree assault and two counts of aiding and abetting in the first degree.

In an interview with police, Johnson said he and Fitzgerald were broke and needed money and that Fitzgerald told him about an "old dud" who probably had some money.

Fitzgerald told police in a post Miranda interview, the complaint said, that he knocked on the front door and asked the man if he needed any yard work done. He then pushed the man inside the house and shut the door and admitted to punching the man twice.

Fitzgerald currently remains in custody. If found guilty, he could face up to 20 years in prison.
