I have had a Krups coffee maker: for what I guess has actually been a pretty decent service life, given the number of years, number of times in those years I have moved and that I am a pot a day fella. Anyway, some aspects of the design I liked, but, somethings could have been better. Of course they haven't made that model in a while.

Has anybody bought a coffee maker of any brand in the past year (or otherwise a model likely to still be on the market) or so that you are particulary happy with? I like espresso but don't need it & am not inclined to two-in one machines. . . though if you have one that you really like, please let me know.

Oh, I should add, the machine I have died yesterday. I have a "by the cup" thing I can pour boiling water through, but it is fairly inefficient and messy. So timely responses are good.

So it brews into an insulated pot and doesn't use a heating element except to brew?

That is cool. Sounds like it might be more energy efficient too.

Generally hot in the pot for hours.

Word of advice: clean it regularly. We forgot to do that and had to get a new carafe once we shined a light inside our old one

French press all the way here.

You guys waste too much time brewing and drinking coffee. There's a much simpler way to get your caffeine every morning.

Well, no specific brand recommendations, but make sure the lid sits down inside the top edge, instead of wrapping around the top edge of the glass. The 'wrap-around' feature redirects poured coffee down the side of carafe, all over the place. Both me and my parents ended up with the special "feature." Every time I use it (fortunately rarely) I end up just thinking the engineers ought to be flogged.

I used to have a fancy Braun. It cost over $100. One day it broke.

I have since adopted a new procedure of coffee maker acquisition:

1) Go to Walgreens.
2) Buy the cheapest one.

Some of them are crap but overall I've ended up with twice the service life of the Braun for half the expense.

Doesn't work for bread machines, though, some of them actually suck. But that's another story.

My wife came home with a $7 coffee maker from Walmart or Target. It worked great. But someone in my house put the pot in the sink and it broke. It seemed pretty fragile anyways.

When I started search online to see if this was a regular price, or if ebay had them too, the comments were "This works just as good, with the same life span as my expensive coffee maker." If you could find the $7 one, buy two. The brand is Chefmate. I would buy another one, if I ever left the house...

This brews as good of a cup of coffee as you are going to find - especially if you are using a grinder too!

Spending more money does not help the taste of the coffee. Cheapest one at Wal/k/target/budget/Sams/mart is the way to go. They put hot water through ground nuts. OTOH, there may be features you desire. That's different.

With all respect, I must disagree - Coffee needs to brew at a temp of 195 to 205 degrees and have brewing time of about 4 1/2 to 5 minutes. The cheaper discount brewers are usually not capable of producing the temperature needed and brew too slow -

Also, your higher quality machines give you the option of using a gold filter vs paper filters - paper traps many of the oils that give quality coffee its flavor -

and as long as I am at it, please, no coffee in the freezer, it acts like baking soda and absorbs the odors around it.

I know of what I speak, spent 3 years with a major coffee chain teaching this material to customers and employees...

Sold. The Cuisinart with thermal carafe is on my shopping list. Looks like Lowe's has 'em any other retailers?

I do have a Black and Decker coffee maker that has a thermal pot. Be sure to check how the lid works. On mine, I thought you push the button down while pouring. Turns out it is similar to a clicky pen. Push down(click) it's open, click it again to close. I had many pots of coffee that went cold after 20 minutes because I clicked it open without knowing, and left it open.
