Following a piece of humble pie, I've determined that I really only scratch the surface in understanding computer security. I'm unhappy about this and want to get it right. Can you point me towards square one?

Which book(s) should I look into? Any websites? I'm a pretty quick study. If you were me and wanted to get more savvy, where would you start?

Bruce Schneier is a great source for sensible comuter security info.

Just ignore anything he has to say about guns.

Yup. I'd go a bit farther and say that when he ventures outside of computer security, he's hit-and-miss, except when he talks about guns and any security issue where the g-word comes up at all . . . where he's pretty much all miss.

What do you want to secure? Your home network? Your small business? Your massive corporate enterprise?

I could be wrong, but I think he wants to know what the issues are, in general.

Yep. Pretty much the home, which is largely business. Two systems and an XBOX play together on the network.

Who is your ISP?
What modem are you using?
Are you using a separate wireless router?

Look into a firewall appliance. Most manufacturers make small hardware devices that perform multiple functions like Virus checking, Spam checking and Intrusion protection. If you're operating a business, it should be a must. An appliance like that would go between your network and the Internet, preventing unauthorized access to your system from the outside.

One example would be this Watchguard device:

Here is a random listing of firewall applicances on Pricegrabber to give you some idea of pricing:

If you really want to play around, and have some exp with *nix you could check out Untangle. It is a replacement for powerful firewalls that will do all of the following for free:
Quote:
Web Filter
Virus Blocker
Spam Blocker
Ad Blocker
Attack Blocker
Phish Blocker
Spyware Blocker
Firewall
Routing & QoS
Intrusion Prevention
Protocol Control
OpenVPN
Reports
They also have some pay add-ons, but probably nothing you need for home use.

You can run it on a stand alone server, or as a program on your XP machine.

Really depends on how much coin you want to drop on it. If it's for business, Cisco makes a sub-$1000 ASA appliance that I tend to spec a lot for small installations.

Watchguard makes a solid product as well, I just can't stand their management when compared to Cisco...

Still, neither is exactly for amateurs.

Yeah. The nineties called while you were reading Bruce Schneier, and asked that you might return their keyboard and monitor.

IMO, recommending that someone read Bruce Schneier to implement personal computer security is ridiculous.

I read Bruce regularly. In my experience, he isn't really directing his expertise towards the average desktop...

Steve Gibson is a much better (and infinitely more talented) resource for that.

Um, I have no idea what you're talking about, aside from the nineties ball mouse and CRT monitor.

I just did a quick search for photos of computers and guns. :(
