A Minnesota Deputy Sheriff stops at a farm in rural Minnesota and talks with an old farmer. He tells the farmer, 'I need to inspect your farm for illegal drugs.'The old farmer says, 'Okay, but don't go in that field over there.'The Sheriif verbally explodes saying, 'Mister, I have the authority of the Sheriff's Department with me.' Reaching into his rear pant pocket and removing his badge.

The officer proudly displays it to the farmer. 'See this badge? This badge means I am allowed to go wherever I wish, on any land. No questions asked or answers given.Have I made myself clear?  Do you understand?'The old farmer nods politely and goes about his chores.

Later, the old farmer hears loud screams and spies the Sheriff running for his life and close behind is the farmer's bull. With every step the bull is gaining ground on the officer. The Sheriff is clearly terrified.The old farmer immediately throws down his tools, runs to the fence and yells at the top of his lungs. 'Your badge!Show him your badge, Smartass!

Yep. Law enforcement officers with that kind of attitude don't tend to last very long in rural areas.

Unfortunately, today they would just shoot the bull.
After all, they have the badge.

Carry weapons will not stop cattle.

An adult bull? Probably not without a lucky hit. They're 2500 pound animals, very muscular, more so than wild game. I was trying to put a cow down one time and shot it in the head point blank with an entire cylinder of full-boat .357s, none of which penetrated the skill. Didn't faze it a bit.

Yes they will, it has all to do with shot placement and even a .22 rimfire can drop them in their tracks.

I'm sure you're both right on the money.

If a person has ample time to line up the shot on a target under ideal conditions and keep all the fundamentals of accurate shooting in mind, you could drop a bull with a single shot.

If a person is running in terror with the bull gaining ground, the running man could fire 10 rounds from a .45 and not faze the charging animal.

If I recall, adrenaline isn't exclusively a human horomone...

But I think the point is, the badge should have stopped the bull.

And believe me, that's exactly the position I'd be shooting from!

We dropped every steer every year with one .22 rimfire round for butchering when I grew up. Granted, you didn't want to wait around to see whether it might stand back up or not, so you moved on to the next step -- which I'll keep to myself -- quickly.

But have you tested your theory on a badger?

I won't get anywhere NEAR one of those blasted oversized rodents. They exist simply as a mechanism to transport teeth, claws, and one nasty temper.

A .22 rimfire will certainly kill a beef steer. Unfortunately my brother learned that lesson decades ago. We were crossing a farmer's field going from one hunting area to another up in Stearns County. Halfway across a steer became curious, as they are want to do, and started following us at a trot, and quickly catching up to us. My brother feared for his life, raised his squirrel gun, and fired.

The result was that it set my father back many hundreds of dollars. Thank God back then sherrifs did not necessarily get involved.
