Had a little trouble making rent this month, just needed an extra day.

Turns out that there was an unauthorized charge of $900 to Amazon.com.

Amazon confirmed it unauthorized and admitted they shut down the account. They will not provide any more info to me directly. They will work with law enforcement. The bank is sending the paperwork for me to fill out to get my money back.

The only thing I can think of (without more info) is that someone grabbed my card numbers when I left it for a tab at one of two bars. One I have never been to, the other I'm there frequently.

Check your accounts regularly.

Good advice, I check mine often. This type of thing happened to my wife a few years back. In her case an employee of a store she purchased from copied her credit card info and then gave it to his girlfriend at another store where purchases were made. My wife (who was about 110 pounds) couldn't understand why there were charges on her card from a "plus size" women's store. She reported the theft to the credit card company and local police. Their investigation revealed the details of the theft, they told us that both clerks involved were juveniles. The credit card company took away the bogus charges and that was the last we heard in the matter.

Yup.

My wife went to the gas station, and her (our) credit card was denied. Apparently the credit card company found two $500 charges in El Salvador to be suspicious and turned off the card.

We still don't know where the card number got stolen -- online or at a restaurant.

Huh. Wouldn't think too much about it if I hadn't just had a close call. the Sunday before last, my credit card got denied at Sunday lunch. Monday I called the CC company and they said they'd locked my account because of suspicious activity. They'd be (and since have) sending me a new card with a new number, though they'd spotted a $1.89 or something charge, they had reversed. They said these folks frequently will put a "just seeing if it'll go through" charge on before racking it to the limit. Anyway, I was VERY happy with my CC company's fraud protection. I didn't think any more about it until I read this thread. Seems we may have a mini-crime wave going on. HOOORAY for U.S.Bank & their credit card division!

+1 there. US Bank once called me to let me know that my CC# "might be compromised" due to a break-in at a golf course where a whole slew of CC data was stolen (I had recently golfed there). So I didn't even have any fraudulent charges or anything, but they still called to let me know that I should be on the lookout. That was much appreciated.

Reminds me of 1999 when I looked at my statement and saw a $900.00 charge at the EP Super 8 motel. Called the CC company and inquired to the local PD. Turns out a server at the Chan Applebees kept a copy of my CC and used it to pay for the room her and her boyfriend had stayed in for a month. Got to talk to the Carver County PD as well, since the CC theft happened in Chan and the card was used in EP.

Check your statements every month!

likewise check your checking accounts for odd things,
'

SA hit me for a $3000 debit on an electronic check transfer for what had been a 30.00 gas fill. that took a few weeks to get SA to understand that there was NOTHING in the store worth 3 grand, I even had the receipt with the $30 charge circled.

I had a few charges on my card that happened overnight totalling about 3000 a couple months ago. They were all to bed bath and beyond online. I guess the company figured it was fraud and canceled the order and returned my money, but that was a scary few days. I made so many phone calls. Still not sure how they got the numbers.
