You could be right, Tex. We were up checking stands last weekend and were surprised that we did not jump any deer on the drive in. On the bright side though... A LOT of sign and tracks in the woods -

- there is a farmer in the area known to offer a bounty on wolves taken on his land - no thanks...but I will say that while I do not load my rifle until I get in my stand (4:30am yikes!) - my .357 is ready on my side along with my Surefire flash light.

...this is so much fun! It is snowing in the cities - I could talk about deer hunting all day!

Me too! I'm very excited...I'm at work this morning, but I'm heading up this afternoon. Everything is all packed and ready to go. Should have some good poker games in the hunting shack tonight!

By the way ronin....I hunt near Mora as well. I'm about a mile west of McBee's (in Ann Lake), so not too far from Mora. We've always had successful deer camps up there. Nice area...

We hunt a combination of public/private land. Historically I've always spent morning stand on a piece of public land, been doing it for 10+ years now. And typically I pulled at least one deer out of that location every year.

Two years ago I stopped....not because I stopped seeing deer, but because I was afraid of getting shot....or shooting some dumbass who pissed me off.

Even in shotgun zone, people were situating themselves far too close to me. The ridge 200 yards from me was like a fence line of hunters. Always made me nervous when the sun came up what I'd see.

Not to mention that I'd be out there 2+ hours before sunrise so I could hunker down and be quiet a good while before shooting time. Then AT shooting time or even after it so jackoff would rumble up in his truck radio blaring, slamming doors and walk right past me on his way to whereever he is sitting.

I hunt because it's fun and relaxing. Sitting on that land no longer was.

That's the problem I have down here south of Mankato. Every dumb f*ck and their brother shows up and acts like asshats when entering the woods. :?

Other than I'll most likely be working, that's the main reason I'm not hunting this year.

I need to find some REAL private land to hunt!

STORY:
About 6 years ago, I got permission from a land owner to hunt his river bottoms SW of Amboy. He said, "You're the only one that I've given permission to hunt it". I scouted it, planned my hunt, etc..... Even compensated him for allowing me to hunt his land.

Opening morning:
I walked in there around 3 am, found my spot and settled in for sunrise. 8)

I'll be damned if 30-45 minutes before sun up, I heard nothing but vehicles pulling up, doors slamming, shotguns racking and dipsh*ts tromping through the woods. :?

Ya know how it is when you can see shapes (not colors), just before the sun comes up?

Well, within 100 yards of me (in a 360 degree circle), I saw NINE 'hunters' at various positions 'surrounding me'.

Needless to say, I made as MUCH NOISE and motion as possible walking out of there.

Well just got back home (school) and had an alright weekend. Saturday afternoon me and my dad were sitting together and a good size doe came runnin down the field and ran about 3 feet from my barrel, dropped that one. My dad missed the buck behind it and it ran right into my cousin. He dropped it and when he walked up to it he said it was literally gushing blood. It tried to get up and run and then collapsed so he figured it was dead. Next thing he knew it got up and ran away! He didnt want to shoot it in its ass and he figured it would die not to far away. Well we trailed blood for about 3 hours before we gave up looking for it. We couldn't believe that it ran as far as it did with all the blood it lost.

Oh well, i get my jerky and ground venison so I'm happy.

On to South Dakota pheasant hunting next week.

Thanks to some kind souls, I got invited to private land this year. No deer to take home but a good time in the woods and some valuable experience. It's like one guy said: "I swear deer can read!"

I also swear they can sense the guy in the lottery area without a Doe tag. Only deer I saw was a decent Doe who just meandered along in front of me between official sunset and end of legal shooting hours Saturday. Stood about, looked in my direction, looked over her shoulder (had me hoping for a Buck on that one) and then wandered away.

I did enjoy watching grouse, woodpeckers, beavers, and eagles in their element. I didn't see the Porcupine but it was near the cabin.

Back from camp yesterday afternoon in time to catch the vikes/packers. Camp was not as productive for us this year...only one button buck hanging from the rail. I didn't see ANYTHING except for an owl dive-bombing critters early Saturday and a few tweety birds that afternoon. It was cold and windy. I think the wind hampered our efforts....the deer probably get really spooked when they can't hear their surroundings.

My cousin saw a very young couple right away opening morning. He shot the doe first, which ran off bleeding, and the buck just stood there, so he shot that too and droppped it on the spot. Later on, we tracked the doe for about 1/2 mile and then the blood trail just ended (we were also finding bloody bone fragments). Must have been shoulder shot...I suppose a deer can go a long way on a wounded shoulder.

Other than that, 3 grouse were taken by the guys driving through the land trying to scare up the deer for those of us in the stands. A farmer from the adjoining land came over on Sunday and said he saw a bobcat. THAT would be cool to see.

We're going to give it another shot this coming weekend. A dusting of snow and no wind would be nice.

I plan to be exceedingly helpful around the house this week in hopes of a grudging "good boy, go hunting" trip Friday night / Saturday Morning :-)

To be fair, she took the young boys shopping and to the MOA while I was gone. Certainly not a picnic.

Took a nice 8 pointer Sunday morning in Mora, as I am getting up from gutting it out I see nearly two-dozen wild turkeys go running by. This is an absolute first!

Hey Dean,

Big congrats to your son on his buck...and WOW, that is a major deer in the second photo. I have seen one like that only once, three seasons ago. It stood broadside about 100 yards away - I "buck-fevered" like an amateur - my body was shaking and I could not get the damn thing in the scope - he finally walked away while I watched helplessly - unreal.

My whole body can tell you how big that second one is. I had to help drag his dead carcass about 300-400 yards across a so-called clearcut.

Dean - invest in one of the game carts!

I picked one up this fall to use for hauling scuba gear, and it just happens to work OK for hauling deer out of the woods too!!! my buddy and I agreed that it was far superior to dragging! well worth the $60-100.

be safe out there everyone!
