I'm in the market for a new 9mm Pistol. Right now I'm looking at a Springfield XD Service Model, 4" Barrel as a serious contender.
The one I'm looking at comes with w/Heinie Slant Pro Night Sights.

Anyway, never having shot the above gun, I'm wondering:

1. How is the out-of-box trigger on this gun (or XDs in general.)
2. Does anyone have any experience with a fairly similar pistol that might have a better trigger (Must be DAO, High-CAP, etc.)?

Price is an issue.

No DAO is going to have a superb trigger, there are just too many things the trigger is trying to do at once to get an excellent trigger.

I just want to know which one is considered the best by those who have shot them. Are you saying I should buy a 1911?

That's true, but XD is single action. :)

Oooh, that's true, so technically I don't need DAO. But I hope you get the idea. Pistol ala Glock, XD, M&P- you get the idea.

There are some nice trigger jobs that can supposedly be done to the XD as well, removing a lot of the initial takeup.

... And honestly, I think I've got my mind pretty set on the XD. The Heine Straight 8 Night sight option right from the factory is a very nice selling point. I do however like to hear from others since I just don't get out near enuf and I haven't shot a lot of different guns. Oddly not very attracted to the Glocks. CZs are sweet but their polymer guns don't seem to be very popular for some reason.

I will throw my weight behind the Glocks. While the OOB trigger is good, I have found I like the NY 1 Trigger much better. This is a drop in part and really makes a huge difference in travel slop, crisp break and overall trigger happiness. The Glock is my primary gun.

Swapping a Glock trigger can be done locally and there are many combos to be had. Last I heard was the trigger work on an XD must be shipped out of state to have it done.

I prefer Glock myself, but it's a matter of what points naturally for me.

Harland, if you're trying to decide between them just see which one fits your natural point of aim better. There's enough difference in the grip angle that it should be very noticeable. Whichever one is better, buy it. Both are known for being as reliable as death and taxes.

You are mentioning Glocks, XD's, etc. that are not true DAO. Of the true DAO pistols, I've found the CZ's to be mildly rough, the Tanfoglio's (EAA Witness) to be somewhat better, and the Sig DAK trigger to be outstanding. All are true DAO, in that they provide second-strike capability.

Hmmm, would this be a place to plug the HK P7?

Second strike capability, but striker-fired...

Might break the bank a bit, though.

Of course you should buy a 1911 unless you like gritty, nasty icky triggers and guns with weird safeties.

I'm taking care of that 1911 problem next week.

Between that and the P7, I should have about two of the nicest triggers around in my safe.

Until the boating accident that is bound to happen the week after next, of course.

If I could afford a good Kimber or an EMP I'd think about the 1911 route, but for the time being I wanna keep the price between $500-700.
HK P7? No offense but kinda ugly. BTW, no votes for M&P yet? Signs of scarcity or lack of interest I wonder?
