I saw a news story awhile back connecting the rise in crime to the inability to get sudafed for make crystal meth. They now have to buy the meth instead of making it locally.

The general idea is just to get together with a couple of your neighbors, and take a stroll on warm nights. Crime is highest on warm nights, concentrated on weekend nights, generally 10 to 3. I'm hoping for some kind of identifier (like vests) to wear, and to work in groups of 2 or more. As you walk, you say hi to people on their porches, spread the word that some grown-ups are keeping an eye on things (and recruiting). Now that every one has cell phones, 911 is just a touch away.
I'm hoping that just having some eyes and ears on the street plays a deterrent role.

Yeah, Mexico is the hot country for meth manufacturing now, from what I've been hearing. But at the very least, the restrictions on sudafed are making local meth labs disappear. And those things are nasty, dangerous places, often full of children. And the cost of cleanup after a raid is astoundingly expensive- often into the $100K+ range.
What a nasty drug this is turning out to be. Even worse than crack.
That drug's taking a backseat to meth, so it seems.

I would want to absolutely keep concealed things concealed, when I participated in a program like this. I wouldn't even tell the other walkers. The ID garments would be for mutual recognition, and so people and cops would know who the good guys are, that we weren't some kind of new gang.
The group I would try to start would cover the Calhoun-Isles community, basically everything west of Lyndale, south of the freeway and down to 36th or 38th. Your area, Mark, (at least where your store stands) is east of there.
Stores like yours could be a valuable resource, though, after hours, as a place for pre-patrol meetings, or temporary operations centers. I'd like to find a few retailers like that over here.
